Early this year we expanded AlaskaFit. If you’ve been here recently, you’ve seen the new space and the barbells, heavy dumbbells and kettlebells we’ve added. This marked our move to add more strength training to our regular programs. And our clients are LOVING it!
We are gearing up for our second Strong Body Challenge and we want you,Ginny, to join us.
Why are we so fired up about strength training? And why do we think you should add strength trianing to your workout routine?
1. Muscle looks better than fat. You’ll often hear people say muscle weighs more than fat. Not true. 5 pounds of muscle = 5 pounds of fat. They’re both 5 pounds. What’s different is that muscle takes up less volume than fat. What that means for you is that 5 pounds of muscle around your waist looks tight and sexy. Where 5 pounds of fat around your waist hangs over and is affectionately called “muffin top.” Build more muscle, look better in your jeans and wear that tight-fitting shirt without the worries.
2. More muscle = more calories = more fun! When we increase our muscle mass, we increase the number of calories we need to eat throughout the day. Muscle is more metabolically active than fat and that means we have to eat more high-quality food to maintain it. And, worrying less about how much food we eat is just more fun.
3. Strength = Independence. Think about it. When we are physically weak, we can’t move around as well in our day-to-day activities. We don’t run up the stairs when we’re weak, we hope we’ll make it to the top without running out of breath. When we are weak we have to ask for help lifting things. (Were you able to get your carry-on into the overhead bin using your own strength the last time you traveled?) The stronger the are, the more we can do things for ourselves and others…that makes us more independent. The stronger we are, the more confidence we have in everything we do and the better we make the world around us.
