Early in April, I received a phone call from a friend in NY. He’s someone I’ve known for over 15 years and he helps me with business and financial decisions. He’s very familiar with what we do here at AlaskaFit.
He had a proposal for me.
Did I want to meet Colin Campbell?
Did I want to meet Colin Campbell?! OMG, YES!
Who the heck is Colin Campbell? He is the author of a book that cemented my belief that fruits, veggies and starches are the secret to a healthy life. I had always known this instinctively. As a child, I would choose rice over meat, veggies over junk food and water over soda almost every time. In my 20s, I gave up eating meat because I believed then (and still do) that it was the healthiest option. In my 30s and 40s, I experimented with other options as outlined in Part 1 of this blog.
Now, just as I was pondering returning to this simple, healthy way of eating, I had the opportunity to meet the author of one of my favorite books in the world.
The China Study , co-written by T. Colin Campbell and his son, was published in 2005. I read it (it was a gift from a client) in 2007 and again in 2009. My copy is highlighted, underlined, dog-eared (I wrote YES! numerous times in the margins).
With an enthusiastic YES! I boarded the plane and attended the meeting. I met Colin and a room full of other pros who all eat whole food, plant-based diets (more on this in part 4).
The timing could not have been better. I re-read The China Study and picked up Colin’s two other books, Whole and The Low Carb Fraud, all in anticipation of meeting him. I felt a bit like a groupie or a stalker, but if I’m going to go all in for a “celebrity” he might as well be a scientist.
That meeting was 6 weeks ago. Let me tell you how much fun I’ve been having since then.
